TAMPA, FL – All but two of the 13 players selected in the WPS Expansion Draft on Tuesday were veterans of USL’s W-League. The expansion draft was held for the two 2010 WPS expansion clubs, the Atlanta Beat and the Philadelphia Independence.

The first five selections in the draft (Leigh Ann Robinson, Lori Lindsay, Jen Buczkowski, Amanda Cinalli and Nikki Krzysik) had at least 11 W-League matches under their belt, and with the exception of Robinson, all had logged over 2,000 minutes of W-League action.

Robinson, the first overall selection of the draft, was one of only three FC Gold Pride defenders to play over 1,000 minutes. She finished the season with 1,339 minutes and one goal.

Both Philadelphia and Atlanta were able to select up to nine players from other WPS teams that played the 2009 season. Initially, existing teams were able to protect up to 10 players – adding two more protected players after losing their first player. No team could lose more than three players.

Philadelphia’s first selection was former Washington Freedom midfielder Lori Lindsay, who played in 28 matches with the W-League Freedom from 2007-08. Over those 28 matches Lindsay netted nine goals and added 11 assists. She started 18 of 19 matches for the Freedom in WPS this season, finishing the year with 1,569 minutes played. Lindsay added two goals and an assist to the Freedom’s scoring output.

The two expansion teams collectively had to select one player from each existing team prior to selecting a second player from an existing team. In addition, the expansion teams collectively had to select a second player from each existing team prior to selecting a third player from an existing team. Only one international was selected in the draft. Saint Louis Athletica’s Sara Larsson was tabbed by Atlanta with the 10th overall selection.
