Miami Kickers FC Win Home Openers Against Puerto Rico Capitals and Florida Surge

South Florida WPSL Franchise Starts Out Strong

Plantation, FL, June 8, 2009 – The Miami Kickers FC, the South Florida franchise of the Women's Premier Soccer League, opened up their 2009 season with two exciting and important victories at home against the Puerto Rico Capitals, Friday June 5, 2009, and Sunday, June 7, 2009 against the Florida Surge.

Despite a rain delay on Friday, the Miami Kickers FC sailed past the Puerto Rico Capitals with a huge 7 -1 victory.   With a repeat weather performance on Sunday, the Miami Kickers FC battled fiercely and physically against the Florida Surge, and came out on top with a 2 – 0 victory.

"The Miami Kickers played two solid games against the Puerto Rico Capitals and the Florida Surge even though the field conditions were not the best due to inclement weather,” said Marc Miceli, Head Coach.   “We have recruited a number of new talented players to the Kickers for the 2009 season along with our seasoned nine returning players,” added Miceli.

New to the Miami Kickers FC roster in 2009 is Sam Wright (Cornell University) she replaces Betty Ann Casey at forward this season and Sam is continuing in Casey's shoes as being one of the top scorers in the league.  Returning standouts include Alexis Hernandez (Nova Southeastern University) whose tenacity and versatility played a key role in both victories.  April Perry (FIU), Tamara Kocken (FIU) and Stacy Payne (Florida Gulf Coast) provided strength in the offensive battle in both games.   The Miami Kickers FC defense held back their opponents with returning Captains Deidre Bass (UM), Rochelle Willis (Princeton University), and Joanne McCaughey (Jacksonville State); along with new comers Kristin Chenault (USF) and Rachel Bueno (American Heritage).   Midfield players moved the ball very well with returning players, Elanna Brady (Barry University), and new comers Olivia Elias (Florida Gulf Coast University), Melony Poviones (American Heritage) and Stacy Payne (Florida Gulf Coast University).

“I was extremely pleased with the overall performance by the entire team this past weekend, and look forward to this upcoming weekend’s match against Palm Beach United,” added Miceli.
