Hatters Drop Semifinal Battle to Bruins

Kennesaw, Ga. - A late goal off a set piece allowed #2 Belmont to defeat #3 Stetson 1-0 in Thursday's semifinal of the Atlantic Sun Conference championship. It was the second time in as many seasons that the Bruins (10-5-4) have eliminated the Hatters (11-7-2) in the post-season tournament.

After the teams played the majority of the game even, it was a Hatter hand ball and a Bruins set piece with approximately seven minutes remaining that decided the contest. The free kick by Annie Musacchio from 30 yards out nicked the crossbar and tucked just inside the top right corner. Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, Mo.) had made several brilliant saves early, yet could not quite get to the game-winner.

"That was a quality finish for them", said Stetson Head Coach Julie Orlowski. "The unfortunate thing was that they had the same kick in our game up there earlier this season that tied the game late."

"It was a good heavyweight match in the first half. We came out strong in the second and created a lot of good opportunities, yet could not get a clean shot on goal", she added.

Emily Yero (Orlando, Fla.) led the Hatters with four shots. Katie Bitetto (Jacksonville, Fla.) had three shots with two on goal. Garavaglia finished with seven saves.

Stetson completed a successful season with 11 wins, tied for the second most in the history of the program. Bob Wilson's 1996 team (12-8-0) and Orlowski's 2006 squad (12-8-1) finished with 12.

"We feel bad for our seniors that they had to go out like this. Emily Yero, Elise Ketcham, Emily Ware, Heather Berg and Danielle Sefczek have been vital to the program over the past four years and will be hard to replace", said Orlowski.
