ST. PETERSBURG | As the soccer ball zipped into the net, Bri Folds ran to celebrate with her teammates.
Supposedly, Folds, a freshman forward for Lakeland Christian’s girls’ soccer team, was to see limited action because of a knee injury against host Shorecrest Preparatory School in the Class 1A Regional Final on Tuesday.
That was not the case.
Folds’ direct-kick in the 53rd minute gave the Vikings a 1-0 victory over the Chargers in front of about 400 fans at Haskell Field.
With the win, LCS (26-1-1) will play host to St. Johns Country Day at 7 p.m. on Friday in a 1A state semifinal.
“I hoped we could get a lead and not need her, but we needed her” Vikings coach Jason Streets said about Folds. “She is money on direct kicks. I knew it was going in.”
Folds’ goal came from the top of the box after a tripping penalty was called on the Chargers (19-4-2). more
