UT Earns Second-Place Nod In Preseason SSC Rankings

ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2010 Sunshine State Conference tournament champion University of Tampa women’s soccer team will enter the 2011 season at No. 2 in the SSC preseason poll.

National semifinalist Florida Tech has been picked as the preseason favorite to capture the 2011 Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer championship.

Coming off a year in which the Panthers shared the SSC regular-season title and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II semifinals, the squad collected 187 points and 14 first-place votes in a poll conducted among the league’s women’s soccer coaches and sports information directors.

Tampa, which received 156 points, was selected to finish second and garnered two first-place votes. Nova Southeastern occupied the No. 3 position with 128 points and one first-place nod. Very close behind the Sharks was Rollins, which was predicted to place fourth. The Tars gathered 125 points and the remaining first-place vote.

With 119 points, Saint Leo was slated in the No. 5 slot. Florida Southern’s 109 points put the Moccasins in sixth. Barry (7th, 71 points), Lynn (8th, 53), and Eckerd (9th, 24) rounded out the preseason poll.

Head coach Gerry Lucey’s 2011 squad welcomes back eight starters and 16 letterwinners from a team that was 16-5-2 last season while advancing to the NCAA Division II South Regional finals. more
