TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Five seems to be a popular number around the Florida State athletics department these days. The Seminole soccer team will open the 2011 season ranked No. 5 according to the preseason top 25 poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Tuesday, August 9. The announcement comes exactly five days after the Seminole football team earned its highest preseason ranking since 2002, coming in at No. 5 by the USA Today Coaches Poll.
“It’s great,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “It shows the level of respect that we have earned over the course of time as being a top program. But it is the end of the season rankings that mean a lot more. We know that with the quality of the schedule that we have we are going to be tested from the beginning to the very end of the season.”
The ranking by the Seminole soccer team marks the fifth straight year FSU has earned a spot in the top 10 of the NSCAA’s preseason poll. At No. 5, it is the highest preseason ranking for the Garnet and Gold since opening the 2008 campaign at No. 4.
“I feel that we have established a level of consistency,” added Krikorian. “The quality of the soccer is very good. We have very good players and I would like to think that we play an attractive style of soccer, so it’s nice to be thought of so highly by the coaches who vote on this poll.” more
